Holiday Home Tour Redlands 2018

Peter Taylor and Derek Aguilera home

The 3,300-square-foot home now owned by Peter Taylor and Derek Aguilera was built as a congregational church in 1883 and reconstructed in 1900 as a home for local businessman Harry Gregory and his family.

A state-of-the-art "green" house with panoramic views is among six homes on this year's Redlands YMCA annual holiday tour.

Built in 2012, the house maximizes the use of natural and energy-efficient resources to minimize its environmental impact. The 5,000-square-foot home, owned by Barbara L. Smith, largely matches the same footprint as the 1949 house it replaced. It has four bedrooms, four-and-a-half baths and a lap pool.

Peter Taylor and Derek Aguilera, Bob and Gina Beeman, Dean and Candace Hadley, Luke and Misty Maiberger, and Wes and Shelly Swen are the other homeowners opening their houses for the December 8th, tour.

"As always, the tour features a diverse group of houses," Home Tour Committee Chairwoman Shelli Stockton said. "This year's lineup also includes four vintage Redlands houses and another newer home. Plus, the Redlands Conservancy is opening the historic San Bernardino Asistencia to tour ticket holders."

Proceeds from the YMCA home tour and its Dec. 7-8, Holiday Gift Boutique and Pantry, support the Y's Legal Aid Clinic.

Tickets in October

Home tour tickets, $30 in advance and $35 the day of tour, go on sale October 1st. Patron tickets, which include brunch and front-of-the-line access to homes, are $80. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Redlands YMCA or online at ymcahometour.org.

"Olive and Citrus, one of the newest downtown Redlands restaurants, is hosting the Patron Brunch this year," Stockton said.

Heritage Homes

Architectural elements of the Taylor and Aguilera home are reminiscent of the style of older houses found along the U.S. southeast coast or perhaps on a Hawaiian plantation. Recipient of a Redlands Area Historical Society 1985 Heritage Award, the house sits on an acre filled with mature trees, beautiful gardens and a koi pond. The 3,300-square-foot home has four bedrooms and three baths.

Originally built as a congregational church in 1883, the house was reconstructed in 1900 as a home for local businessman Harry Gregory and his family, according to the Historical Society. It was most recently remodeled in 2018.

Dean and Candace Hadley's house is the recipient of a 1984 Heritage Award. The 3,360 square foot restored home has massive brick fireplaces in the two living areas, beamed ceilings, an updated kitchen, three bedrooms, an office and three baths. The grounds include a detached garage, large pool, patios and an outdoor fireplace.

Redlands Colony co-founder Frank E. Brown built the structure in 1891 as the barn (carriage house) for his third house. The carriage house was converted to a home around 1928, based on records the Historical Society reviewed.

Early California

With 6,000 square feet of living space, Luke and Misty Maiberger's house is the largest on the tour. The couple has lived in the Early California style house for 20 years.

Built in 1898, the house has arched accents and crown and base moldings consistent with the era, according to the Maibergers.

The couple remodeled the house in 2001. A veranda is off the master bedroom.

Wes and Shelley Swen have lived in their 1923 Spanish-style bungalow for four years. Remodeled in 2016 to create an open floor plan with a vaulted ceiling, the 1,776-square-foot home has three bedrooms and two baths. The drought-tolerant landscaping also is new.

Two casitas, a large kitchen, second story veranda and advanced electronic systems are among the features in Bob and Gina Beeman's Mediterranean style-house.

With a new addition to the 2016 home, the house has 5,100 square feet of living space, eight bedrooms and seven-and-a-half baths.

"We are honored that these homeowners have volunteered to open their homes for this year's home tour," Stockton said.
