Third Age Total War Installers Says Run Again

Overview

Seeing as everybody's and then utterly clueless well-nigh installing Third Age: Total War, I idea I'd tell you how to at least install it.Crashing isn't my alley. 😛

What is Tertiary Age? and what do I demand to take it?

This guide is outdated. For an easier to use, steam compatible installation see here:

Foreword

For some esoteric reason a expert number of M2TW installations exercise not have the executable rename method not the standard BATdesktop short cut method. It seems to be connected with the servers the installation gets downloaded but this couldn't be confirmed.

With that in listen this guide has been set up upwards.

Intro

For those poor, clueless, people who don't know what "Tertiary Historic period" is, information technology'south a consummate overhaul for Medieval: 2 Total State of war. And information technology'south nifty (minus a couple of pocket-sized problems).

Every bit for what you will need, this guide assumes y'all have Med II AND the Kingdoms Expansion, both on Steam. You will also need a decent internet connectedness, or else it'll have about ten years to download. 😛

Getting the files

Okay, and then y'all want it only accept no clue where to get the files. Well, your best bet is off moddb ;

[link]

Scroll down, ignore all the marketing 😛 until you become to the Download Links flake.
You'll go three files off in that location:
1) The 3.0 function i installer
2) The three.0 part ii installer, and
iii) The three.2 patch installer.

They are big files (past my standards :P) totally almost 4GB in size; that'south why you lot demand a decent net connexion. 😛

Y'all may go a message saying you need to exist a fellow member. Not then! Shut that bulletin, and click on the Download button again. Then rapidly (before the message comes up) click on the "Attempt some other mirror" text at the top right of the popup. From that you can pick a mirror that DOESN'T require a membership.

You besides desire this bug set up[world wide web.twcenter.cyberspace]. That's the original topic y'all tin read, notwithstanding this link [www.dropbox.com] has all the files yous need.

This is a rather puny file in the order of 0.1MB, something fifty-fifty MY internet could download in less than an hour. 😛 Simply what's this? .rar ? What is THAT? Is it a flake like a .zip?
Yep. To extract it you lot can do one of three things:
ane) Google .rar extractor and get the least trustworthy site bachelor (not recommended :P)
2) Use 7-zip[world wide web.7-null.org].
3) Use Universal Extractor[www.legroom.net].

Either mode, you lot'll have the files out in no time.

Installing it

You lot take all the files, you accept a nice shiny copy of Med II and the Kingdoms expansion, but you have no clue what to do.

I; You can view this video, or 2, you lot can read the text below it.

Commencement the first .exe installer: that'due south 3.0, part 1. Read the license, click yes, click side by side, until it comes up with the spot where you desire TA to be installed. It will come up up with something funny ranting about SEGA by default. That'south because they oasis't bothered updating information technology for Steam users.

You want this to go to your Steam directory. That's by default "C:Program FilesSteamSteamAppscommonMedieval Ii Full State of war." However, anybody either a) with Vista or b) is sensible will have moved the game directory out of Plan Files as Microsoft doesn't want you lot meddling there.

If yous tin can't be bothered moving information technology, it'south okay. It'southward just you'll accept to click "Yes" several times to various security things.

Anyway, you lot're upwardly to inbound the directory bit in.
You want it to go to the folder that looks like this:
You'll run across how it says "Medieval Two Total War" up the top. (Zambezi is the drive I use for storage, deal with it :P) So if y'all want information technology to get to this folder, you'd type in something similar this:

If it comes up and tells you "This folder doesn't exist. Do you lot want the directory to be created," exercise Not click Yes: You've done something wrong.

Yous do NOT want to install it into the "mods" folder. NO. That will create ANOTHER sub-folder called "mods" and you'll take to do a lot of working effectually that.

In one case that's finally finished (if it stops responding, leave information technology be: it'll sort itself out. Unless it's taken three days, in which case you accept a trouble. :P), guess what?
Practice the SAME THING with the 3.0 Office 2 installer.
And the SAME Matter with the three.2 patch installer.

In that order, please.

The side by side section contains bits that may make multiplayer dysfunctional. At this bespeak, your best motility is to copy your TATW folder and paste it, so you have two copies. 1 can be used for multiplayer and the other one will have a far better SP campaign experience.

Leave the i you designate for multiplayer.

The one that you want to be your SP campaign map, y'all need to patch the three.ii patch with those Essential Bugfixes.
Excerpt them out of that pesky .rar format (Why can't people just utilise a .nil, I don't know… ) and so open "Readme.txt" or whatever information technology'south called.

Do what it says for the first and second points. As for the third, first observe Map.rwm and delete it. For " *strings.bin " , that means "Anything ending in blahblahblahwhateveryoulikegoeshere__strings.bin" (You lot're looking at stuff like battle.text.strings.bin for your information) . All the same, deleting all the stuff tha ends in strings.bin will break a DaC installation but is all the same a skilful thought for TATW iii.2 . Your best bet is to copy out your TATW folder over again and only edit one. Stuff a small text document in 1 saying "Anything that ends in strings.bin has been deleted" and something that says "This has still got its strings.bin" in the other, and if you similar install DaC on top of that ane. (Thanks for Barras for digging this up to me!)

Finishing off installation and playing it

If you have run the installer and installed the game as mentioned in the video above. And then all y'all demand to exercise is run the .bat file within the modernistic folder and/or the shortcut that was provided to you lot on your desktop.

Every bit mentioned by Arachir in his installation video. Using the renaming method is archaic. Information technology was the original method for launching Steam mods that acted a trivial funnily. In these enlightened times nosotros no longer need the method. It notwithstanding works, but it has issues of its own.
Specifically, Steam will option upwardly these files equally "correct files" and when you try to reinstall it will reinstall your modernistic. This is not a trouble if your mod is working fine. If it isn't – typically the time when you want to reinstall – it prevents you from actually running M2. The solution is to go out M2TW uninstalled for 30.00 days, at which point Steam will really beginning downloading the "proper" files again.

If withal, you do desire to rename your folder, practise follow his petty department on that.

ADVANCED fashion of running Third Historic period

Y'all tin can run the game via the binder renaming listed above. This section is a slightly more than technical of running TATW that some people similar.
If you merely desire to get TATW working, don't use this method.

Credits: This guy and his guide here:
[link]
as well equally Inardesco, who rants nearly information technology regularily 😛

but the method's hardly copyright. 😛 (he has method 1 which is fussy; I'm using method 2)

Anyway, what to do:

1) Rename your Third Age binder back to Third_Age_3 or something memorable. In this instance, I'll use ThirdAgeTW equally the proper noun for my folder.

two) Get over to your Steam Library. Right-click Medieval II and select Properties.

iii) Go to General, and click "Set Launch Options." Y'all should go a lilliputian box popular-upwards, lament that "these options are for avant-garde users but." Well, I did say…

4) Add this:
–features.mod=mods/Whatsoever.You lot.NAMED.YOUR.Tertiary.AGE.Folder.TO
so in my instance I add
–features.modernistic=mods/ThirdAgeTW
and then click Ok.

Alternatively, you can create a desktop shortcut for the Medieval2.exe and paste the launch option after it; "M:GamesSteamsteamappscommonMedieval II Full Warmedieval2.exe" –features.mod=mods/Third_Age_3

The main deviation in using the launch options through Steam or through a desktop shortcut, is that using it through Steam always launches the mod, even if you don't want to. Whereas using the desktop shortcut, launching the game will give you the vanilla game, non the mod.

It is, rather, a method that depends on how you lot, equally a person, would similar information technology.

^ That says "featured." Information technology should say "features" – with an Southward. (Give thanks y'all TotalWarHero)

5) Now, run Medieval II. Don't run an expansion – just run the main game, the original. Launching an expanion appears to crash the game.

half dozen) Of course, if you desire vanilla back, or want to launch some other mod, simply become rid of the launch option / alter the folder name.

Installing Divide and Conquer (currently v2.2)

Notation: I highly reccomend you play original TATW iii.2 kickoff, earlier you lot play Divide and Conquer. This section is in the aforementioned guide for ease of reference – I hope for this to be your one-end solution to if not all, well-nigh of your Third Age problems.

NOTE: DaC v2.ii is the latest version of the Divide and Conquer modern. All OLDER versions are no longer bachelor for download on either TWCenter.com and Moddb.com.

To install Divide and Conquer you will demand:
– Medieval Two
– Kingdoms expansion
– A fully functional Third Age 3.2 installation – yous MUST check this commencement.

Download your DaC files off TWCenter.com or moddb.com – get them over hither:www.twcenter.internet/forums/showthread.php?778983-DaC-Download-amp-Installation

You will need DaC Parts ane AND part two and so follow the video.

Ofttimes Asked Questions / Mutual Bugfixes

0a) Before you lot practise absolutely any troubleshooting whatsoever, stop using that desktop shortcut. THEN read the residue of the FAQ.
0b) Also endeavor running the installers as admin. In severe cases you may need to temporarily turn off your antivirus, although this is rare.

0c) Also try redownloading the installers if the game is simply but breaking. This isn't oft an issue, especially if you just quietly left them downloading overnight (by far the best option).

i) Multiplayer games are incompatible!
To play multiplayer you need:

  • Same Os. No crossplay between Mac and Windows, I'grand agape. I can, nevertheless, point you lot to this group, which is a drove of Mac M2 players, some of which play TATW. [link]
  • Same method of M2. As far as I know, if you have the retail version you lot tin can't play with Steam owners. What you lot tin can do with the retail version is shove your product key in Steam and install everything via Steam.
  • Same version of M2. That is, patch i.0.06.1 or whatever the number is (it'southward non large). This is very rarely a problem and only if you haven't touched your M2 game in yonks.
  • Aforementioned modernistic. This shouldn't exist a problem. However, if you lot're running TATW 3.2 y'all can't play with people running TATW 3.0 or with the Divide and Conquer submod (remind me, I need to put a section upward on that
  • Same method of launching it. This is well-nigh certainly your problem. If you use the americas campaign your other players must be using the americas campaign to launch. If you use a custom shortcut, then must they.

2) Axethrowers crash the game when they burn!
AXETHROWER CRASH FIX:
[link]
I'll write upward a nice department on it… former 😛 It works for both DaC and TATW, and probably also MOS too.

3) The game says "M2 has encountered an unspecified error and will at present exit!"
Chances are you didn't install it properly. Or you're using the .bat shortcut. Which yous shouldn't exist. Either way, follow the guide to the letter.

4) I'm on a Mac, what should I do?
I tin can't give you much advice, as I run a Windows, simply have a look at this guide:
[link]

5) Tin can I overwrite the One thousand Entrada (GC) instead of the mods?
Yeah, just it will screw everything else upwards and:
1) Information technology's fussy to install.
2) It's fussy to uninstall.
3) It'southward fussy to run.
4) Information technology's fussy and will overwrite the chief data for other campaigns; the Teutonic campaign, for example, uses game settings, files, and STUFF from the master game… which is at present TATW. (All my Castles look like Minas Morgul at present, and my cities wait like those of the Galadhrim (Lothlorien)).

6) Anyone wanna play / y'all wanna play with me?
As for me, I'thou a solitary SP AI-basher who generall is AFK far too often to play online. I tin can, notwithstanding, say that there are enough of others who will happily play with you. To list them all would accept ages, but only search up "Third Age Total War" on Steam groups and see what you find.

7) Tin can I take lots of mods installed at the same time?
Using the –features.mods=mod/modname as your way of launching mods y'all can install as many mods equally you want. Do note that using the rename method can pause those campaigns then merely instl all mods in their own folder and use either the aforementioned launch options or the launcher that came with the mod upon install.

8) When I effort to run the files Windows merely complains "What do you desire to open this with?"
This is an odd issues, but the solution is unremarkably rather simple. Get your files, rename them, and stuff a .exe on the end. So you end up with
TATW_part1of3_whateverthefilenamesays_you-can-rename-this-for-all-I-care.exe
and and then run as per usual.
